Scaling & Root Planing

During your visit, our periodontal specialists will use a variety of techniques to conduct a deep cleaning of your gum tissue, such as scaling and root planing. The scaling technique involves using a small instrument to reach beneath the gum line and remove plaque buildup where your toothbrush and floss can’t reach. Once this is completed, we will perform root planing, which smooths the surface of the tooth’s root to allow your gums to reattach to the tooth.

Gum Graft

Gum recession is the occurrence of your gums pulling away from the tooth and exposing the root. If you’re suffering from gum recession, a gum graft may be necessary to repair the damage. During a gum graft, gum tissue is removed from a healthy area of the mouth and placed around the damaged area.

Preventing Gum Disease

Your at-home dental hygiene routine has a large impact on your gum health. Gum disease is a bacterial infection and the best way to avoid it is to properly remove the bacteria from your mouth. Adequately brushing is a good start, but flossing is critical. Your toothbrush can’t properly reach between the teeth and at the gumline as flossing can. For additional protection, incorporate an alcohol-free mouthwash into your daily hygiene routine. As always, make sure you’re attending your biannual cleanings with your periodontist in Fort Wayne. When you come in for your routine checkup and cleaning, we’ll also examine your mouth for any signs of gum disease and, if needed, create a personalized periodontal treatment plan to stop it in its tracks.
