Cavity Prevention

Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but that does not make it invincible to decay. Dental cavities are the most prevalent oral issue – yet it is also the most preventable. Understanding cavity prevention is the best way to keep your mouth healthy and free from decay.

Dental plaque is the cause of cavities. Plaque is the sticky white film that develops on the teeth each day after eating. Plaque is made up of sugar loving bacteria that feed off of carbohydrates from foods and beverages to produce acid. This acid, if not expelled from the mouth on a frequent basis, will demineralize tooth enamel. Once the tooth enamel begins to demineralize, the acid will continue to eat through the layers of the tooth until a hole, or cavity, has been created.

The process of a cavity forming happens over time. Now, if you eat a high sugar diet the timeframe can be short, but for most people the process takes a few weeks or even months. However, with proper oral hygiene at home and regular dental checkups and cleanings, cavity prevention is relatively simple. The most important aspect of cavity prevention is daily brushing and flossing to remove plaque from the teeth. Many avid teeth brushers are surprised to find out that they have a cavity because they “brush after every meal.” However, it is important for people to understand that brushing alone is not enough for cavity prevention. Flossing is essential. Flossing the teeth removes damaging plaque from between the tight spaces of the teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Eating a healthy diet that is low in refined sugars also plays a significant role in cavity prevention. Sugary foods are typically sticky and sugar itself easily sticks to the teeth. Constantly snacking on sugary foods puts your teeth at continuous assault against cavities.
